The release of The Marvels trailer at the top of the week may have had the intended effect of increasing the hype for the third and final MCU movie of 2023 among the more level-headed, reasonable members of the fandom, but it’s also reinvigorated the crazy, pathetic side of the community into spewing fresh hate against star Brie Larson. Ever since Captain Marvel came out in 2019, the Carol Danvers actress has been at the center of an internet storm that barely ever quietens down.
Recommended VideosFor context, The Marvels trailer has been disliked so many times that it’s not just the most-disliked MCU trailer ever, it’s also about 3000 percent less popular than the Morbius trailer. Given that we can confidently predict that Nia DaCosta’s film will be nowhere near as bad as Sony’s infamous misfire, clearly this speaks to a deeper, all-consuming problem some quarters of the internet has with anything Larson touches. And her defenders think they know what’s really at the root of this.
With “Brie Larson” trending on Twitter as her devoted followers race to her defense, many are arguing that the reason certain people hate Larson is because of her outspoken commitment to more “diversity and equal opportunity for interviewers and journalists,” as one viral tweet put it.
The hate for Brie Larson all stems from the fact that she "dared" ask for more diversity and equal opportunity for interviewers and journalists. This was simply to much for the neck beards and they have been harassing her constantly for the last 4 years. pic.twitter.com/jTEnOAyvPv

The reason why white men hate CM:
Bfr the 1st CM movie came out – Brie Larson called out movie critics (who are mostly w men) for harshly criticising movies whose target audience are NOT aimed at/don’t cater to w men,
including films whose target audience are children & teens: https://t.co/CdFR4pVUw9 pic.twitter.com/CBL46CQLQm
— Hashirama’s Wife (@TriumphSensei) April 14, 2023For many people, Larson’s championing for increased diversity in the film journalism industry only serves as proof she’s “amazing.”
Reminder of why Brie Larson gets a ridiculous amount of undeserved hate from the toxic dredges of the internet. She’s amazing ❤️ https://t.co/w2IjkQPFVW
— Brandon Moore (@indigo_15) April 14, 2023Apparently, the anti-Brie brigade have very long memories.
All Brie Larson said was she wanted more diversity amongst interviewers and journalists. From that point on she's been constantly harassed for almost 5 years.
— That REDACTED Guy #NWH (@REDACTEDSpider) April 14, 2023Unfortunately accurate.
Brie Larson: I just think mainstream movie critics should diversify a little more. When a movie is representing a certain culture, I'd much rather hear perspectives of people from that culture than old white guys.
Incels : SHE HATES ALL WHITE MEN! BURN HER AT THE STAKE! pic.twitter.com/bzTesxk2sx
— Kimberly Amy 🏳️⚧️ (@comicsAmy) April 13, 2023We’ve no idea who’d be willing to undertake such a study, but otherwise this is a good idea.
we need an academic study on how incels have decided brie larson is their mortal enemy for no real reason https://t.co/hJ4d3Pjs99
— tati | 6.17 🔴🌙 carol era (@darkbluetntv) April 13, 2023Larson’s fearless tendency to speak her mind and stand up for her beliefs may well be part of what sends her haters into a fuming frenzy, but it’s also what makes her such perfect casting for Carol Danvers in the first place. For those who actually want to see it (which, going by the original film’s $1 billion gross, is likely a lot), The Marvels hits theaters on Nov. 10.
